"SUV Rollover Risks Kept Quiet,"
Sept. 20, 2000- New fatality statistics show 10,694 people died in 1999 in rollovers. While SUVs are among the most popularvehicles in America, they are also the riskiest when it comes to rollover accidents. But, critics say the auto industry has hidden that danger from consumers to protect profits.

Referring to why manufacturers did not want SUV ratings to get out, Clarence Ditlow of the Center for Auto Safety says it's purely a matter of economics:

"Some SUVs have a $15,000 profit to the manufacturer in them. The average sport utility vehicle has about a $5,000 profit. The manufacturers don't want to lose a single sale and they're afraid if rollover ratings get out, they'll lose sales."

"NHTSA Feels The Heat,"
Sept. 7, 2000- Members of Congress accused the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of being asleep at the wheel, but critics say it was Congress that put it to sleep by cutting funding. The NHTSA has lost 30% of their staff since 1980 and its budget by 36%. "One former NHTSA investigator says the agency just doesn't have the muscle needed to police auto safety. And until that changes, the industry, and not regulators, will call most of the shots."
