"SUV Rollover Protection at the Top of NHTSA Priority List"

July 29, 2003
Congress is in the process of deciding on the auto industry’s regulatory agenda and policy direction for the upcoming years. SUV rollover accidents have been in the news a lot since the Ford Explorer/Firestone tire fatalities killed 270 people. Since the 2000-2001 SUV rollover incidents little has changed in SUV rollover safety protection. New statistics were released showing that fatal SUV rollover accidents have increased significantly in one year’s time.

Lawmakers have felt the pressure over the last couple of years to improve auto safety, in result decreasing the number of SUV rollover accidents that occur. Especially since SUV popularity continues to climb despite the SUV rollover numbers, consumer groups have been outraged with the lack of standards put into place. Now, auto executives are waiting for the outcome of the NHTSA’s decisions.
